November 1, 2009 When all was said and done last season and our champions were crowned, we had a total of 68 athletes who had rushed for 1,000 yards or better and 69 quarterbacks who had thrown for the magic number. At this time of the game, after the regular season, there were 48 runners with that number and 59 quarterbacks who had thrown for 1,000.Presently, we are sitting at 52 runners and 52 throwers so we are just a little ahead of the rushing numbers for last season, and seven behind on the passing. Now not all numbers have come in for this season, so those may be a little off, in fact, there are around a dozen each athletes who have over 800 yards as of last week who have not had statistics reported yet that we could track down for this week so we may actually be slightly ahead in both. Last season, it appears that a total of 20 athletes went on in the playoffs to blow by the 1K mark and we expect that many again this season. With the regular season over, it is also time to start looking at numbers for the Hovpen.Rivals.com post season honors. Usually, a player who makes the pre-season list has to be displaced by someone who has actually preformed better on the field, and I do see some of those this season who have come on strong in their senior year. It is particularly difficult displacing a lineman as those projections come mainly from the college recruiters and who they are going after in the state. It is real easy to overlook the 6-1, 240 pound stud who moves mountains simply because he doesn't get the press. That is where you come in as coaches and fans. We will not release our team until after the final game is played, with a target date of December 1st, although in the past, we have done so the night of the final games. We do like to look at the final games before making some decisions, and while selections are not made based on championships, a great performance in the final game can not be overlooked. WE have several teams with double 1,000 yard guys. Hutchinson and Sedgwick come to mind immediately. We also have a couple quarterbacks who have both passed and rushed for 1,000 with Basehor's Brandon Leppke having already done so, and Blue Valley Northwest's Koby Chadwick getting awful close, needing 160 yards in the playoffs on the ground to hit it. We also need to start looking at some underclassmen. I went to see a couple Friday night that some people were high on and came away thinking both could have better games. Anyway, it's nearing 1pm on Sunday, and I need to get this up and get on with my life which today means that I have to dust the cement dust off all the furniture downstairs and start putting files back in desks along with my DVD highlight video collection and the 700 some DVD's I have of photos taken the past several years away so I can find one if I need it.
